By the time February rolls around, most of us are more than ready for the snow to start melting and the numbers on the thermometer to start climbing. But as anyone who lives in Chicago knows, Midwest winters can last well into March, if not April. So how do you get out of that slushy February slump? We say, if you can’t beat the snow, play in it!
This Saturday and Sunday, February 8th and 9th, Snow Days Chicago returns to Navy Pier! These aren’t like the snow days you remember from school. Instead of hibernating inside, you’ll get to play, paint, and embrace the beauty of the snow at Gateway Park. And best of all, admission is completely free!
Sculptures, snowboarding, and other wintry delights await you this weekend at Snow Days Chicago 2014. The event kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, and with all there is to do and see, you’ll want to get there early. Why not start off your day by playing with some penguins in the Family Pavilion? The Shedd Aquarium will bring its beloved Magellanic Penguins to the Pier from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on both Feb. 8th and 9th, and their trainers will be there to answer all your questions while you watch these polar pals waddle around.
After that, get ready to express your inner artist at the Snow Painting station! Invoke some icy inspiration as you paint a “cool,” colorful masterpiece using the actual snow as your canvas. Or, if you’re not feeling artistic, leave it up to the pros and check out the Snow Sculpting Competition! Watch as 15 professional teams from the U.S. and around the world transform blocks of snow into incredible works of art. You can even participate by voting for your favorite!
But that’s not all! If you have little tykes in tow, make sure you save some time for the Interactive Snowboard Experience where kids will have the chance to try snowboarding for the first time with the help of instructors. And if you need a break to warm up, pop into the Polar Play Zone inside the Family Pavilion, where you’ll find crafts, a bean bag toss game, giveaways, and more!
Don’t call it quits just yet though. Make sure you stick around until after dusk to see the snow sculptures transformed as they are illuminated by festive, colorful lights! It’s a magical sight you won’t want to miss.
With all the frosty fun to be had at Snow Days Chicago 2014, you’ll start seeing snow in a new light (literally!) and get the jolt you need to take on the rest of winter! Find more information on hours and activities on the Navy Pier Snow Days web page, and don’t forget, admission is free! We’ll see you at Gateway Park this weekend!
