Looking for inspiration? Want to be in the know about everything cutting edge happening in the art world? Hoping to connect with arts professionals and gallery owners AND meet the artists behind the work? EXPO Chicago is your answer.
EXPO Chicago, the city’s preeminent Exposition of Contemporary/ Modern Art and Design, opens up the fall art season by taking over Navy Pier’s Festival Hall for four days of art discussion, appreciation, and viewing. From Thursday, September 20 through Sunday, September 23, visitors will be privy to large-scale and site-specific installations from many international galleries and are invited to sit in on a number of topical talks and panel discussions led by industry experts.
EXPO is split up into three main program categories:
EXPOSURE is a special program devoted to bringing the viewpoints of younger galleries to EXPO. Twenty galleries in existence for up to five years were hand-selected to take part in the fair and present one or two emerging artists in order to raise awareness about their programs. The name states it best: EXPOSURE gives newer galleries the perfect opportunity to introduce their most innovative works to a public hungry for the fresh and exciting.
For works from bigger and more well-established galleries, there’s IN/SITU, a collection of large on-site installations and performance works compiled by independent curator and writer, Michael Ned Holte. 100 top international galleries have been invited to participate; their installations can be seen scattered throughout Festival Hall. Make sure to allot an entire day for viewing because there’s a lot to take in.
Rounding things out are the EXPO/DIALOGUES, presented in partnership with The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. These exciting talks feature a variety of speakers covering many topics, but all center around modern art and how it’s able to address issues in the contemporary world.
There’s even a little something for the kids at EXPO Chicago! Several exhibitions feature artwork made solely by kid-artists, including a collage-creation project themed around Navy Pier’s Ferris wheel. And there’s also a special area of EXPO called Art Park where kids are led through projects and activities by staff members of Chicago Children’s Museum.
