If you’ve visited Navy Pier this summer (and if you haven’t yet, what are you waiting for?), you will have noticed that the Pier is undergoing major construction for The Centennial Vision, a reimagining of Navy Pier to mark its 100th anniversary in 2016. These renovations will allow Navy Pier to offer more evening and year-round entertainment, new attractions, and a unique experience reflective of Chicago’s diverse culture.

Renovations of the Pierscape are underway and progressing every week. You can follow the renovations through the website’s continuously updated photo gallery. The plans for the Pierscape include relighting the Pier’s exterior, dramatic changes to the landscape and streetscape, and additional renovations to the Crystal Garden, South Dock and East End Park. Navy Pier will play off its access to the water, air, land, and city by offering memorable attractions that take advantage of each of these gorgeous geographical features. We are excited for our visitors to experience the Pier and Chicago in a way they’ve never experienced them before!

As a non-profit organization, Navy Pier recently accepted a legacy gift of $20 million from the Polk family, longstanding retailers and benefactors of Chicago. The Polk family’s contribution will be applied to the redevelopment of Navy Pier’s entrance with the family memorialized through the naming of the new Polk Bros Park.

Polk Bros Park will feature two new grand and ornate performance spaces. These spaces will host live arts and cultural events, allowing Navy Pier to offer more entertainment opportunities than ever before. The performance spaces will look out onto Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline, offering audiences views of performances, as well as the majestic city. Polk Bros Park will also house a magnificent fountain composed of water jets depicting waves, fish, and birds. Come winter, the fountain will then be converted into an ice rink for skaters of all ages to enjoy. Additionally, the main promenade will become the Welcome Pavilion, a widened and updated space for outdoor activities such as bicycle and skate rentals.

Keep an eye on our website for all things renovation-related. We are excited to showcase the new Pierscape in honor of the 100th anniversary of Chicago’s most popular destination. Until then, please continue enjoying Navy Pier’s many attractions, which are still open throughout construction.
