Chicago Ideas Week | Navy Pier

Chicago is a city of great movers, shakers, and thinkers so why not celebrate this constant local innovation? For one week, the city will do just that during its annual Chicago Ideas Week!

Chicago Ideas Week

From October 8 through October 14, Chicago Ideas Week, or CIW, will sponsor discussions across the city, from locations as diverse as the historic Tribune Tower to the Koval Distillery, on a variety of topics like how to give CPR to an animal, how to bake a great loaf of bread, how to keep a 21st century audience interested in opera and how to create a successful website. CIW will also present talks from an illustrious set of speakers such as General Colin Powell, Tom Brokaw, and David Gregory.

For a mere $15, the public can buy a ticket to any of CIW’s outstanding events. Interested in a particular topic? Attend a 90 minute CIW talk where a handful of speakers focus on a theme. Got a hankering to learn more about something local? Sign up for a CIW lab and get an exclusive introduction and backstage pass to the inner workings of a Chicago business. Thinking bigger, more global? Buy a ticket to a CIW megatalk and listen to a group of internationally distinguished guests put in their two cents about world-wide issues.

Navy Pier: Future Design

So what do we find the most exciting about Chicago Ideas Week?

The special lab we’re hosting on Friday, October 12 right here at Navy Pier, titled Navy Pier: Future Design!

To give you a little background (which can also be found in one of our blog posts from January): Last year, we announced our intention to redevelop public portions of Navy Pier in celebration of our centennial year in 2016 and sent out an invitation to design firms around the world to submit their qualifications and vision for the Pier. From 52 submissions, we narrowed the finalists down to five.  Their concept plans later became part of a public exhibition at the Chicago Architecture Foundation. From those five, we chose the winner of our “Pierscape” project: James Corner Field Operations, a landscape architecture firm perhaps best known for their creation of the High Line in NYC.

From 3 p.m.-5 p.m., come and join us for a talk about our redesign of the Pier. You’ll get all the updates, as well as a peek of the latest plans, as we discuss the many ways we hope to revitalize “The People’s Pier”!
