Ever since The Fellowship of the Ring, the first movie of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, came out in 2001, J. R. R. Tolkien and Peter Jackson fans have been asking the question: when will it be The Hobbit’s turn?
Finally, after years of waiting, fans will be able to experience The Hobbit when it makes its silver screen debut! And the filmmakers haven’t tried to squeeze all of the action into one 2-hour movie; instead, they’ve spread out the story between three films and we here at the Pier couldn’t be more excited.
If you haven’t read the book but have seen the LOTR Trilogy films, you’ll discover some very familiar characters popping up—Bilbo, Gandalf, Gollum, that pesky gold ring—but may notice that they appear a little younger. That’s because The Hobbit is a sort of prequel to the story of the Lord of the Rings.
Here’s a basic synopsis of the film without giving too much away:
Gandalf the Grey recruits Bilbo Baggins to serve on a daring mission (much as he later convinces Bilbo’s cousin, Frodo, to take on his own quest in The Lord of the Rings) and because Hobbits are surprisingly brave creatures, Bilbo agrees. The mission pairs Bilbo up with a motley crew of thirteen dwarves who are undertaking a journey to the Lonely Mountain in order to reclaim their lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor and the treasure that rests beneath it from the dragon Smaug
Along with Gandalf, the crew sets off and encounters many dangers along the way from orcs to goblins. Trapped within a goblin tunnel underneath the Misty Mountain, Bilbo is separated from the rest of the group and stumbles across a mysterious gold ring and its owner, Gollum … and the rest you’ll just have to wait and see in the film!
