Tips for the PSI Career Fair | Navy Pier

The job hunt can often feel long and fruitless. You submit your interest and resume to a couple dozen companies a week and maybe hear back from one of them – and that’s on a good week.

Personnel Strategies Inc. (PSI), a company devoted to bringing together employers and a diverse group of candidates, wants to make the job hunt a little easier for you.

On Tuesday, September 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., current job seekers with a 4-year degree or more are invited to come down to Navy Pier’s Lakeview Terrace for a NAACP Premiere Diversity Career Reception to meet and network with a number of great Chicago businesses, including Jewel-Osco, Molex, Prudential, Walgreens, and more!

Bring along a resume, wear business attire, and make your way to Navy Pier to learn more about some very exciting Chicago opportunities! No need to register and admission is free!

Never been to a career fair before?

Here are five tips to help get you prepared:

1)      Dress professionally. The #1 goal of any career fair or networking event is to leave a good impression and the first way you do that is through appearance. Treat a career fair like you would an interview—that means business attire, conservative hair styling, and minimal make-up. It’s also a good idea to wear comfortable shoes since the lines can get long and you’ll be standing for extended periods of time talking to employers.

2)      Bring resumes. And we’re not just talking about one or two. We’re talking about a couple dozen printed on higher quality paper, if you’re able. You may go home with some extras, but better that than connecting with an employer only to discover you’ve run out of the one document that contains all of your contact information.

3)      Prepare a one-minute pitch. When you finally have a chance to talk with that employer on the top of your list, there’s nothing worse than freezing up. Come up with a one-minute pitch beforehand that explains your background, goals, strong points, and potential at the company. Knowing what you want to say before you shake hands will keep your confidence sky high and provide the perfect launching off point for further conversation.

4)      Do your research. Know a little bit about the companies and positions before you step up to the table. This will not only show you’re interested, but score you huge points with employers.

5)      Be assertive AND exploratory. Command attention with a strong handshake and make sure to introduce yourself the minute you step up to the table. Additionally, keep your options open. You may come in wanting to target one specific employer, but don’t fail to check out other opportunities too. You never know, your dream job might be waiting in the most unexpected of places!
